Sidney, BC is a charming seaside village beside the Swartz Bay ferry terminal that connects South Vancouver Island to the mainland (and Vancouver), and is only a 20-minute drive north of BC’s capital city of Victoria. Sidney is also known as Canada’s “Book Town” for having the greatest number of bookstores per capita in the country.
We take inspiration from the world of literature and host monthly events, including author readings, books swaps, and a book club. Our Taproom has a selection of inclusive books for kids and we strive to provide a family-friendly atmosphere where everyone is welcome to stop by, satiate their hunger with an artisan sandwich, and have a beer with friends, family, or with their favourite book.
Our core purpose is to create a safe, sustainable, and inclusive community where people thrive through food, drink, and literature. Our values drive our purpose, provide the foundation of our operations, and inform our code of conduct.
Values
Empathy
We seek to create a safe, inclusive, accessible, and welcoming space for our staff, our customers, and those we engage with throughout the community. Empathy is sharing another’s emotions and perspectives by imagining ourselves living another’s life. We believe that empathy is the fundamental basis for inclusion and accessibility and we encourage all who enter our space to view others through the same lens.
Stewardship
We aim to do what is right for each other, our community, and the environment. The word “steward” originally referred to the person who brought food and drink to the dining hall, and while that original meaning still holds true for us at Small Gods Brewing, we now think of stewardship as the intentional acceptance of the responsibility to safeguard that which is most valuable to us—our community and our environment.
Transparency
Small Gods Brewing values transparency because we believe that being open, honest, and accountable is imperative to personal and professional success. Within a business context, transparency builds trust, prompts clear communication, makes room for all voices to be heard, and allows for mistakes. When we do make a mistake, we will sincerely acknowledge the harm we’ve committed, openly apologise, and dedicate ourselves to doing better.
Creativity
Creativity invites us to be curious, playful, fun, and joyful at work. It opens limitless avenues of expression and gives us choices in how we present ourselves, our products, and our space. Creativity encourages alternative ways of learning, thinking, and doing. It offers a sense of satisfaction through discovery, supports resilience in times of difficulty, and incites the imagination to action. We are excited to share our creativity with you.
Code of Conduct
We are committed to providing a safe physical and online space that is inclusive, accepting, accessible, and respectful. Demeaning, disrespectful, or disruptive words, “jokes,” and behaviours will not be tolerated in our spaces. Acts of harassment, bullying, or discrimination based on ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, gender, gender identity or expression, religion, age, ability, or any other aspect of a person’s identity will not be tolerated. We reserve the right to remove anyone who is negatively impacting the safety of others.
